"You shouldn't turn your back on the enemy."— Juuzou Suzuya, Side Story: Joker

Juuzou Suzuya (鈴屋 什造, Suzuya Jūzō) is a Special Class Ghoul Investigator. In the past, he went by the name Rei Suzuya (鈴屋 玲, Suzuya Rei). He was first partnered with Yukinori Shinohara, and is now currently the leader of Suzuya Squad.

He was first assigned to the 20th ward and was responsible for the investigation of the Binge Eater. Later, he was assigned to the 13th ward and was investigating the ghoul Nutcracker, along with his squad.

After Kishou Arima's passing, he was declared by Furuta as The Next Arima (次のアリマ, Tsugi no Arima), the new strongest investigator of the CCG, assuming control of the S3 Squad.

Appearance

Suzuya is a young-looking man with an androgynous appearance, with pale skin and pure shoulder-length white hair. In his hair he wears red hairpins, which form the Roman numeral XIII (13), keeping back his bangs. He has dark red eyes with bags under them.

He self-stitches his own body, explaining it to be a form of body modification. A miniature set of red threads that appeared to be two x's are stitched on below his right eye. One below his bottom lip and a line of several stitching threads from his upper neck downward, and several more around his right arm and hand. His attire consisted of a white suit with sleeves rolled up to the elbows, left halfway buttoned and polka-dotted red suspenders that supported his black pants and a pair of red slippers. He frequently wore a black suit above all this, with rolled up sleeves.

In the Joker side story and at the start of Tokyo Ghoul:re, Suzuya's appearance changes drastically. His hair is now dyed black and reaches only chin-length. And, his stitches are in a different pattern. His attire consists of a black suit with black dress pant and red suspenders with yellow triangle pattern. He has a prosthetic leg as replacement for his leg that was maimed in the Owl Suppression Operation years ago.

Later on in Tokyo Ghoul:re, Suzuya's hair has now reached passed shoulder-length once more. He either keeps it tied in a bun above his head or in a ponytail, or without, as was shown in the promotion ceremony. He has also changed the stitch markings below his right eye, returning it to the original two x's. He has removed all stitch markings from below his right lip. He also changed the Roman numeral in his hair, now making it the Roman numeral XX (20), the "Judgement" tarot.

Personality

As a child, Suzuya's personality was somewhat normal, albeit a tad twisted, but as a result of Big Madam's treatment, he no longer felt fear, pain, nor did he have any morals. Yukinori Shinohara, his mentor, described him as a "problem child". Despite his childish and playful demeanor, he was also extremely violent and highly disturbed. He usually described his killing methods to be clean, without needless movements, which is a skill he seemed to take pride in. He shows no hesitation to kill someone. He even goes as far as to consider it a part of daily life, and lacks awareness of death's weight.

Due to his past, he was blamed for the killings of multiple animals done by Goumasa Tokage and Tooru Mutsuki during his time being trained by the CCG, even though he was innocent. Suzuya was used as the scapegoat since nobody doubted he had committed the killings, which averted suspicions from the culprits who were truly responsible. Suzuya is generally distrusting of people who write him off as a problem child - he notices and hates people looking at him with certain "eyes," judging him.

Because of his lack of emotional understanding, he was willing to confront any opponent head-on, no matter how dangerous they were. This had proven to be disastrous when he decided to take on the Owl alone when cooperation was necessary. Originally, he showed no signs of empathy whatsoever and did not understand the emotions of others. However, when he realized how important Shinohara was to him, he let out a cry of anguish. This demonstrated Suzuya's capability to love and care for individuals close to him. After Shinohara was comatose, Suzuya expressed guilt and remorse for not being able to protect him, deeply bowing and apologizing to his wife, and he also kisses Shinohara on the forehead.

After the timeskip, Suzuya has matured considerably, becoming more calm and warm towards others. Although he still retains some of his childish traits such as bringing candy into serious meetings, he has become a capable mentor and leader, commanding his own team of investigators. He is now somewhat capable of understanding the predicaments and emotions of others, giving sound advice to Tooru Mutsuki after the latter expressed his fear of fighting. Juuzou has become much more dedicated to the CCG, which is evident when he told Big Madam that he was going to kill her, not because of a personal grudge, but rather it was simply his job to exterminate ghouls. Despite his slight change of character, he is still quite ruthless to ghouls.

Plot

Background

Juuzou in action

Suzuya killing for the first time.

Rei Suzuya was kidnapped at a young age and raised as the pet of a powerful and influential ghoul known as Big Madam. He was trained to perform circus acts for ghoul customers, and earned "Good Boy Points" — Big Madam's deceitful system she used to torture him. Eventually, he began working in the Ghoul Restaurant as a Scrapper named "Juuzou." When he killed for the first time, he was sick for several days afterward but eventually his sense of morality faded. Big Madam, who he considered his mother, sometimes dressed him as a girl, and began to worry that he would become ugly as he matured into an adult. To prevent this, she performed a crude castration with a hammer and forced him to live as a girl.[6]

Eventually, the CCG raided her estate and forced her to flee. Rei was rescued and taken into custody, but his violent behavior caused great concern. Yukinori Shinohara spoke up in his favor, reminding the other officials that Rei was a victim and deserved a second chance. He attended the Academy Junior School at 16, where he was a classmate of Kurona and Nashiro Yasuhisa. There, he gained a reputation for strange and violent behavior — when a former interrogator employed as an instructor named Goumasa Tokage and later Tooru Mutsuki, began killing animals around the Academy, he was made a scapegoat to avoid scandal. As such, he was shunned by his peers and treated as an outcast.[7]

When he turned 19, Chairman Tsuneyoshi Washuu personally appointed him a Rank 3 Investigator. To complete his transition into his new life, he was given a new family registry and allowed to choose his own name. He decided on "Juuzou Suzuya," using the alias he had been given as a Scrapper. He was then assigned as the partner of Yukinori Shinohara and sent to the 20th ward.

Aogiri Arc

Juuzou steals Ken's wallet

Suzuya steals Kaneki's wallet.

In his first appearance, Suzuya stole Ken Kaneki's wallet and began to scrutinize the latter's student ID, license, and money, saying that he could not get any sort of food with the three thousand yen he found. He later killed a gang of ghouls that had attacked him because he smelled delicious.[1] After a police officer had arrested him for being suspicious, he was picked up by Shinohara and Koutarou Amon. Because the police officer did not apologize enough for accusing Suzuya, he sucked out his ear bone.[8] Suzuya was later seen at the CCG's 20th Ward Headquarters, where he attended a meeting and explained his "body stitches" to Amon. He also came to a decision to work on the 20th ward, regarding the Binge Eater case alongside Shinohara. He and Shinohara later visited a crime scene, where the bodies of three ghouls were cut into two hundred parts. Shinohara accused Suzuya of the murder, subsequently explaining to him the three main clauses of the Ghoul Countermeasures Law. Suzuya became disappointed when Shinohara refused to give him a quinque, but also listened as Shinohara explained the concepts of ghoul combat — Rc cells, kagune and kakuhou.

Juuzou breaking the defense with Marude's bike

Suzuya infiltrates the Aogiri building.

Suzuya participated in the attack on the Aogiri hideout as a member of the 11th Ward Special Countermeasures Unit.[9] First, using Itsuki Marude's motorcycle to enter the building - destroying the bike in the process. He then began killing the members of Aogiri Tree's assault team , which allowed the CCG to enter the hideout. Afterward, he moved separately from the CCG's teams and tracked down Yamori in his hobby room. Suzuya finished Yamori off after he had already been severely injured by Kaneki.[10]

Afterwards, he went to the CCG Laboratory Division with Shinohara, greeting Kouitsu Chigyou before he received his quinque he named 13's (Juuzou's) Jason which was created from Yamori's kakuhou.

Raid of Kanou's Lab

Suzuya was part of the team that assaulted Kanou's underground laboratory. There, he found Nashiro and Kurona, old friends from his time at the Academy. After a brief conversation, they started fighting. Suzuya was injured in his belly but he withstood the pain and injured the overconfident Kurona, stabbing her several times with all the Scorpion quinques he had stolen. When Nashiro came to help her sister he gave her an almost lethal blow with 13's Jason, saying that he knew how to fight ghouls and what hurt them the most. Kurona rescued her sister and left, hoping Dr. Akihiro Kanou could save Nashiro's life. When they left, Suzuya sutured his wounds.[11]

Later on, he joined Amon in his fight with Kaneki, threw even more Scorpions at the half-ghoul, and attacked him with 13's Jason while criticizing the other doves' performance. After Kaneki escaped he tried to follow him but was stopped by Amon, who told him Shinohara's injuries were more important than the one-eyed ghoul.

Owl Suppression Operation

Sitting alone in the zoo, Suzuya recalled his past with Big Madam. He did whatever she said to be praised, even killed people as a Scrapper to appeal to her tastes, but doing this left him mentally scarred while doing so. At a certain point, the CCG raided the ghouls' hideout, freeing and recruiting Suzuya in the process. Walking alone, he came across Goumasa Tokage who had just finished slaughtering a cat. Surprised by the sight, Suzuya lifted his hand towards the dead animal ahead of him. After being seen, he was blamed and shunned by his classmates for the animal killings. In the chairman's office later on, Suzuya was allowed into the Bureau under Special Class Shinohara's care.[citation needed]

While Suzuya continued to draw animals in the zoo, Shinohara approached him and gave him information for their next operation. Shinohara told Suzuya it was about suppressing the SSS-rated ghoul called the Non-Killing Owl, making Suzuya excited.

Suzuya vs

Suzuya vs. the One-Eyed Owl.

During the Owl's suppression, Suzuya joined in on the attack while being able to land consecutive hits against him. The fight continued, as the Owl began to flee, Suzuya confronted him alone and managed to slash the Owl's left arm off, but he ended up losing his right leg in the process. Congratulating Shinohara on defeating the SSS-rated ghoul, the real One-Eyed Owl appeared in its full kakuja form and attacked the investigators. Suzuya watched as the One-Eyed Owl chopped off Shinohara's leg, making Suzuya remember the times he spent with Shinohara and the things he had learned from him. Suzuya rushed towards the One-Eyed Owl but fell down multiple times on the way. After failing to save Shinohara from the ghoul, Suzuya screamed out because of the sight before him. As the Owl started mixing Shinohara's insides, Suzuya threw multiple knives towards it, he charged towards it trying to injure the one-eyed in some way but failed to do so. He later fainted after getting flicked off to the side.

Post-Owl Suppression Operation

Juuzou saying good night to Shinohara

"Good Night."

In the aftermath of the Owl Suppression Operation, he matured and became more composed, expressing gratitude towards Shinohara and regretted that he was unable to save him when speaking with his wife. In his last scene, Suzuya told the comatose Shinohara he would continue working hard for the both of them and kissed his forehead telling him good night.

One-shot JOKER

Suzuya appeared as a First Class Investigator, introduced by one of his subordinates, Hanbee Abara, who admired him.

At an investigation meeting, Suzuya's team was currently investigating a group of ghouls called the Skull Masks. Akira Mado mentioned that the Skull Masks had managed to acquire more members, and their range for food had expanded as well. They came to a decision to eliminate the Skull Masks' leader.

On Kurashiki Street, Suzuya and his team begin investigating, whereby Suzuya mentioned that his killing method must be done without unnecessary movements, which was a skill that only he wielded within the entire team. The group decided to split up, looking for traces of the Skull Masks' leader.

When Abara tried to muster up the courage to save a young woman from sexual molestation; Suzuya intervened, dealing with the matter instead. Suzuya suggested that they follow the man off the train, saying that he had a foul, suspicious scent. He pointed out Abara's uselessness since he did not have the courage to do anything earlier. Suzuya inquired why Abara even wanted to be an investigator, to which he responded that he was attacked by a ghoul as a child, and his father tried to protect him; losing both legs in the process. Abara had wanted to save his father, but never had the courage.

13's Jason - Joker

Upon hearing screams, they raced to the underground section of the train station, where they saw the bespectacled molester from earlier — with his hand chopped off by a member of the Skull Masks. He was believed to be the leader of the group, and as Suzuya prepared to fight him, they are surrounded by a horde of ghouls. However, since Abara lacked courage once again, Suzuya decided to fight on his own. He dashed through, slashing all the ghouls with his blade. The leader countered with his kagune, but Suzuya retrieved his quinque from a briefcase, only to be damaged in a short time span. Abara at this point finally mustered up the bravery, and impaled the leader with his katana, making Suzuya proud.

As everything went back to normal with the investigation solved, Suzuya suggested they go to a doughnut shop.

Later on, Suzuya remarked that another character was fortunate in keeping his legs after being attacked by a ghoul — a reference to the loss of his own leg.[12]

Nutcracker Investigation

Promoted to Associate Special Class, Suzuya was given command of his own squad in the 13th ward. The Quinx Squad was assigned to work alongside his squad to investigate the ghoul Nutcracker, a member of an organization involved in human trafficking. Haise Sasaki recalled their first meeting and being puzzled when Suzuya recognized him and paid him back for the money he once stole.[1]

On the day the squads were scheduled to begin working together, he overslept and arrived late to the meeting. Upon seeing Sasaki, he rushed to meet the other investigator and frisked him in search of snacks. Abara explained to the others that the two had worked together on previous cases, and became good friends, with Sasaki always bringing Suzuya snacks hidden in his pockets. The meeting resumed, with their primary target being Nutcracker, who they hoped would lead them to a more significant target — Big Madam, the ghoul who raised him.

Auction Mopping-Up Operation

The meeting between Matsuri, Suzuya and Sasaki

The meeting between Matsuri, Suzuya, and Sasaki.

The Quinx successfully obtained information about an upcoming auction, reporting this information to Matsuri Washuu. During the meeting between Matsuri, Suzuya, and Sasaki things become tense when the commander ordered Tooru Mutsuki to be sent in undercover. Suzuya interrupted and volunteered to join Mutsuki as another "girl" being recruited for part-time work, stating that he had plenty of practice disguising himself as a woman. Matsuri gave in to his request and finished the meeting without further incident. Once outside, Sasaki thanked Suzuya for intervening and placed his subordinate in the others' care. Suzuya admitted one of the reasons he volunteered was because of personal business, knowing the target of the operation was his "Mama."

In the weeks leading up to the operation, Suzuya met with Mutsuki to train him. Mutsuki expressed unease over his own powers, admitting that he feared losing control of them just like Sasaki. Quoting a famous boxer, Suzuya advised him that fear can be a powerful tool when controlled but it can destroy you. When asked about this advice, he admitted he learned it from his former superior and partner, Shinohara. Meanwhile, Abara took Ginshi Shirazu and Saiko Yonebayashi to the hospital to visit a still-comatose Shinohara and explained how Suzuya continued to work hard to honor him.

Mutsukiandjuuzoutrain

On the day of the Auction, Suzuya and Mutsuki met Nutcracker disguised as girls. They are drugged during the car ride, taken to the location of the event, and separated from each other. Later during the auction, Uta announced a special item for sale, a beautiful young woman who turned out to be Suzuya. The audience was awed by him, but he took the opportunity to interrupt the auction and revealed the knives hidden inside his prosthetic leg. He stabbed Uta repeatedly in the face, before turning his attention to the ghouls in the audience and the members of Aogiri who rushed onto the stage. Meanwhile, Big Madam recognized him as her former pet.

Ayato Kirishima joined him on the stage, beginning a fierce battle between the two. Suzuya quickly realized his opponent was too strong to fight without his quinque, and was forced to hide when he ran out of knives. Ayato abandoned the fight, allowing Suzuya to slip away with thoughts of honoring his promise to protect Mutsuki.

Juuzou and his squad

When Urie and Mutsuki found the customer ghouls in the product storage room, Suzuya was there already, waiting for backup due to losing his communication device. Urie shrugged it off by falsely claiming there was no signal, all in order to hog as much achievements as he could. Suzuya and Urie headed down and faced the ghouls.

After Urie and Mutsuki faced Big Madam and her bodyguards in an unsuccessful attempt, the rest of Suzuya Squad appeared with Suzuya's Jason quinque and together they successfully subdued Big Madam. He told Big Madam that he held no ill feelings for what he had done to him in the past, and that slaying him was just simply a part of his job as an investigator. It was after subduing Big Madam that he revealed the ghoul's gender, calling him "father."

Post-Auction Mopping-Up Operation

One month after the operation, Suzuya and Abara appeared at the Chateau for a Christmas party. He mentioned that the rumor of Arima falling asleep during combat was true, as he remembered him sleeping a few seconds during a Whack-a-mole Operation due to prolonged combat without rest.[13]

Rose Extermination

In the following Spring's ceremony, Suzuya was promoted to Special Class at the age of 22, the first to reach the rank at that age since Arima.

Post-Rose Extermination

Suzuya attended an S2 briefing under Matsuri, discussing S2's successes in battles against Aogiri in the 23rd ward.[14]

Afterward, he attended a Special Class Investigator Meeting about the continued fight against Aogiri. He spent the meeting eating candy.[15]

Rushima Landing Operation

Suzuya came up behind Kurona and tried to cut her with 13's Jason. When she evaded the strike, Suzuya quickly used Scorpion 1/56 and pierced Kurona's eye. Suzuya charged at Kurona, slashing the trees apart around them. In the middle of dodging, Kurona was quickly surrounded by the rest of Suzuya Squad. Kurona got excited to show Nashiro all of Suzuya's pain. Suzuya questioned if Nashiro had survived the wounds she received from him. Kurona then removed her cloak, showing him her stomach, which was now covered with a kagune face. Seeing this, Suzuya called it disgusting.

Kurona's strike at Juuzou

Kurona destroys 13's Jason and strikes Suzuya in the chest.

Standing before Kurona, Suzuya watched as she started developing her kakuja. He assigned Keijin to Hanbee and ordered the rest of his squad to prepare for battle against floppy. After Kurona had released a set of kagune, Suzuya with Mizurou and Miyuki begin charging her with two of his subordinates holding Kurona in place. Preparing to strike her with 13's Jason, Suzuya was struck in the chest by one of Kurona's kagune.[16]

While Kurona was distracted fighting Suzuya Squad, Suzuya revealed that he has recovered from the previous attack, wearing Arata Joker. He immediately overwhelmed Kurona by repeatedly lacerating her arms and legs. Kurona fled but Suzuya reassured Keijin that they have successfully stopped her. Suzuya Squad then decided to rendevous with Houji Squad.[17]

Post-Rushima Landing Operation

A month later, Suzuya visited Shinohara with Iwao Kuroiwa, in reaction to Sasaki's betrayal of the CCG he has decided that despite Sasaki being his friend he is still an enemy.[18]

Clown Siege

Later, the 19th Ward Branch Office went under attack and he and his squad were among those who defended the building to recapture it from the Clowns.[19]

In a meeting with Kuroiwa, Tanakamaru, Ui, and Furuta, the latter appointed Suzuya as the "New Arima," to which Suzuya obliged, saying he would obey orders as he must.[20]

During the Clown Siege, Suzuya was told by Koori to take care of defending the Main Office. Though Matsuri Washuu tried to tell Suzuya off, Suzuya did not pay him attention, which left Matsuri in irritation. He was then ordered by Furuta to become the leader of the S3 Squad. Suzuya glared at Furuta, and moments later appeared in the battlefield with the rest of S3, ordering them to prepare for combat.[21]

Uta takes Shinohara's form and deceives Juuzou

Suzuya deceived by Uta

When a large host of clowns appeared on the bridge, Suzuya decapitated a massive number of them with a single swing of his scythe, stating that he just had to kill them all, to which Furuta joyfully agreed.[22] Later, he observed Mutsuki's increased ability with his knives and mused about a disgusting feeling in the hand.[23]

As the attacks continued, Suzuya began to notice that the Clowns were not fighting back. Bringing out a knife, Suzuya stabbed a Clown in the shoulder and split his mask in two, only to discover that it was in fact a human. At that moment, the clown-masked human was stabbed through the neck by a tail from behind, which happened to belong to No Face, who greeted Suzuya.[24]

Suzuya threw a knife at Uta, who took it in the throat and stumbled. Suzuya then performed a swing of his scythe against him, stabbing him repeatedly. Noticing that Uta was not fighting back, Suzuya questioned his intentions, only to be taken aback by the sight of Uta revealing himself as Shinohara. As he was fooled and almost killed, Hanbee came to Suzuya's rescue, warning Suzuya and informing him that it was simply an illusion.[25]

As their battle went on, Suzuya's repeated attacks were effortlessly dodged by Uta. Suzuya noticed that he suddenly became completely unable to hit him, before he was disarmed of his scythe by Uta's kagune. Releasing knives from his leg, Suzuya kneed Uta in the head and blasted him away, and Uta began to flee the area while Mutsuki gave chase.[26]

Post-Clown Siege

After the Clown Siege, during the promotion ceremony, Suzuya was made the S3 Squad leader.[27] When "Sasaki" was thrown into the stage and slain, Suzuya watched with surprise on his face.[28]

Later, Suzuya showed up at the Chateau with Kuramoto Itou for a meeting. They discussed No Face's shapeshifting ability, with Suzuya commenting on him changing his face into Shinohara's. They were then interrupted by Saiko.[29]

Another time, when Suzuya was approached by Urie who informed him that the bureau director wished to see him, Suzuya refused without a care, instead inviting Urie to play hooky with him. The two discussed the future operations to come, with Suzuya stating that he wished things could stay the way they were, doubting that peace will ever be a thing.[30]

Suzuya Squad at Takeomi's wedding

Suzuya Squad at Takeomi Kuroiwa and Yoriko Kosaka's wedding.

During Yoriko Kosaka and Takeomi Kuroiwa's wedding, Suzuya was present in the crowd, snacking on candies.[31]

Months later, during the attack on the ghouls of 23rd ward, Suzuya was present with his squad, slaughtering ghouls.[32]

Later on, Suzuya and Hanbee spoke in regards to Goat escaping into the 24th ward. The two conversed about the 100-year-long battle against ghouls finally coming to an end. Hanbee cautioned Suzuya to be careful and not to push himself too hard, as he is still human, to which Suzuya replied that he would be a ghoul if it meant ending the battle.[33]

While Kaneki and some members of Goat left the 24th ward to scavenge food for their organization, the CCG mounted a critical attack against them with the Oggai, leading to the deaths of many ghouls and some of the remaining members of Squad 0. Kaneki, upon sensing something was wrong, returned back to base only to be confronted by Suzuya and Hanbee. They fought and won a decisive victory against Kaneki through a suicide attack implemented by Hanbee. Because of the tremendous injuries the two of them dealt to Kaneki, he was forced to cannibalize the Oggai and was thus instrumental in the creation of Dragon.

He managed to avoid getting consumed by Dragon, and when he was back on the surface he decided against siding with the ghouls in order to put an end to the threat of Dragon, citing that his former instructor Shinohara would be against it. Upon Marude's advice to think for himself however, he decided that they should unite with the ghouls and the rest of the CCG followed. In conjunction with the ghouls and fellow investigators, he fought against the Kagune golems that Dragon spawned. He then fought against V and the Taxidermied Owl and protected fellow investigator Ui from them through the use of his Arata.

Epilogue

As the TSC's highest ranked dragon general, he continues to protect Tokyo. He has gained respect as a top-class peace officer thanks to his skills and accomplishments.

Relationships

Big Madam

As one of Big Madam's former executioners, Suzuya was trained to become a proficient killer. During his youth, Suzuya would try to satisfy Big Madam as much as possible and always done with a smile, as Big Madam sought for perfection and would torture Suzuya depending on the "scores" he received from her. It was Big Madam who destroyed a part of his genitals in order to make him a doll-like girl, hoping for him to live on as "Rei."

At their final confrontation during the Auction arc, despite years of abuse and twisted education, Suzuya still called Big Madam as "mama" and stated that he never hated her for what she did to him. In his final farewell to her, he referred to her as "father," thereby hinting that Big Madam's background might be more complex than what was originally assumed.

Yukinori Shinohara

The relationship between Shinohara and Suzuya is similar to that of father and son; Shinohara usually treated Suzuya to donuts, but did not hesitate to lecture him after he had brutally murdered three ghouls without practicing the clauses of the Ghoul Countermeasure Laws. Shinohara is proven to be very important to Suzuya, as seen when he let out a cry of anguish when Shinohara received a fatal blow, and expressed regret over being unable to save him. Shinohara now remains at the hospital, living the rest of his days in a vegetative state until he eventually recovered, much to Suzuya's joy.

Hanbee Abara

Though Suzuya is admired and highly respected by Abara, he is not hesitant to point out the moments when Abara is being useless. Besides this, Suzuya is somewhat sympathetic over Abara's lack of courage; he would always intervene and fight independently whenever Hanbee is reluctant to face a ghoul. Suzuya was also shown to be proud of Abara's ability to finally impale a ghoul using his sword.

Seidou Takizawa

Suzuya does not display much respect for Takizawa, for he is constantly yelled at and is annoyed whenever Takizawa tries to be overly strict on him as seen when he ordered Suzuya to put away his candy in the meeting room. However, Suzuya is not reluctant to lash out at him, as seen when he poked his fingers up Takizawa's nostrils, making them bleed excessively.

Itsuki Marude

Suzuya respects Marude as a superior but was offended and irritated when Marude openly joked about Suzuya's castration in the presence of Amon and Shinohara. However, he managed to restrain himself from lashing out at Marude, as Shinohara told him to ignore it.

Their relationship was slightly strained for comedic purposes due to Suzuya stealing his motorcycle and using it to mount an attack against Aogiri tree.

Haise Sasaki

As senior-junior comrades, Sasaki and Suzuya share a reciprocal understanding, as seen when Suzuya returned the money he once pick-pocketed upon first meeting Sasaki. Suzuya is also known to have a habit of constantly checking Sasaki's clothes every time they meet; for Sasaki always brings sweet treats and snacks for Suzuya. Sasaki trusted Suzuya to protect Mutsuki during the auction raid. It is hinted that Suzuya knows that Sasaki was previously Kaneki. After Sasaki defects and proclaims himself the One-Eyed King, Suzuya refers to him as a friend as he is one of the few who do not look at him with hatred but he is aware of what must be done.

Kishou Arima

Since becoming an investigator, he and Arima shared a positive, professional relationship. They often participated in Whack-a-mole operations together.

Koutarou Amon

Suzuya is quite oblivious of Amon's true opinion about him and is relatively unaffected when scolded by Amon. However, he can be opened up whenever the latter is curious about his strange characteristics; as seen when he explains his "body stitches" to Amon.

They did not have much interactions in :re, though he was willing to fight alongside Amon after he was turned into a ghoul during the Dragon arc.

Tooru Mutsuki

While their relationship has not been explored much Suzuya has advised Mutsuki about overcoming his fear of his kagune and ghoul abilities and tells him that fear can be used to one's advantage. He also volunteers to go with Mutsuki to the auction and has taught him several knife tricks which he used against Torso on their confrontation after the timeskip.

Kurona and Nashiro Yasuhisa

Suzuya was the classmate of Kurona and Nashiro back in the CCG Junior Academy but did not interact with each other much. He was scolded at when he refused to attend a sickly classmate's funeral, and instead sat in a ditch killing ants. During the raid on Kanou's lab, he sees the two sisters as playthings, deeming it logical and fine to slaughter them due to their ghoul and ghoul investigator positions. However, they get away before he is able to kill them.

Upon a later encounter with Kurona, she demonstrated resentment for what he did to Nashiro. She has a strong animosity towards him, though Suzuya still thinks it is just part of his job for him to exterminate her. He did remark that the appearance of Kurona after she "fused" with Nashiro was gross, however.

Powers and Abilities

Suzuya possesses amazing physical abilities, allowing him to easily match most ghouls in combat. His physical abilities are so impressive that CCG personal claimed that he doesn't even need to attend the Academy and can enter active duty immediately, even though he was just a teenager.[6]

Superhuman Strength: Suzuya's strength substentially belies his slight build; he is strong enough to easily handle the large 13's (Juuzou's) Jason quinque, even while also carrying the entire Scorpion 1/56 set.[34]

Superhuman Speed: Suzuya is incredibly fast and nimble, able to move literally faster than the eye can see; in fact, even most ghouls can't keep up with him in combat. During CCG operations, he was often shown swiftly slaughtering multiple ghouls.[9][11]

Superhuman Agility: Similarly to ghouls, Suzuya can easily jump very high and manouver on narrow surfaces. During combat, he often employs flips and other impressive acrobatic feats.[9][34]

Pain Tolerance: Due to Big Madam's treatment, Suzuya became practically numb to pain. During his time with Big Madam, Suzuya could handle hooks going through the back of his body.[6] After getting his stomach cut open, Suzuya could still fight and beat Kurona and Nashiro without any difficulties.[34][11] Suzuya was still able to consistently fight the One-Eyed Owl after he had lost a leg.[35]

Swordsmanship: Being able to use his quinque to destructive abilities, Suzuya can use the strength of his attacks to efficiently subdue ghouls and even slice off one of the Owl's arms.[36]

  • Scorpion 1/56: A bikaku quinque that takes the form of a flat-headed switchblade. Having great skill with the blade, Suzuya can quickly pinpoint a throwing knife and easily execute ghouls. These quinques are simple yet effective.[37]
  • 13's (Juuzou's) Jason: A rinkaku quinque that takes the form of a scythe with a jagged and squared blade. When using this blade, Suzuya can easily slice through multiple ghouls and use the gimmick to pierce a half-kakuja ghoul.[38] The quinque had been damaged by Kurona's kakuja but later repaired and used to defend the 19th Ward Branch Office against the ghoul attack.

Arata Joker: A koukaku kakuja quinque that is capable of attaching itself to the user and be used as an armor. It enhances the user's speed and allowed Suzuya to ambush his targets so quickly, his target could not keep up with his movements. This armor also has a claw function that was capable of bisecting an SS-rated ghoul with relative ease. Like the previous Arata quinque, it consumes the user, as it caused Suzuya to bleed heavily.[17]

Submachine gun: During the 11th Ward Battle, Suzuya was armed with a submachine gun that resembled a MAC-11. When charging the base, he used the weapon to slaughter every ghoul inside.[9]

Prosthesis: Since losing his right leg below the knee in the battle against the Owl, Suzuya has been fitted with an advanced prosthetic leg. He can detach his prosthetic leg and attack non-expecting ghouls with the blades hidden inside[39].

Trivia

  • In the first character popularity poll, Suzuya was ranked fifth. In the latest, he came in as sixth.
  • His profile in the original series lists his likes as sweets, ghoul hunting, and his Mama.[4]
  • According to his profile in :re Volume 3, his current obsessions are "serious hide-and-seek" and "throwing Hanbee."[5]
  • The association of Suzuya with the number "13" is a word play: It is possible to write the name "Juuzou" with the kanji 十三 (じゅうさん、juusan), translating to "thirteen."
  • 13 (XIII) is also the Death Arcana. Apart from the Grim Reaper parallels it can represent loss, conclusion, sadness, transition into a new state, psychological transformation, and deep change. The number can also be associated with his hair clip, his quinque, his association with Jason, and working in the 13th ward in Joker. It is also considered an unlucky number in many cultures and is associated with death, betrayal and loss.
  • During Owl Suppression Operation, one of Suzuya's hair clips went missing, reducing his number down to 12 (XII); referencing The Hanged Man, or "change," hinting that he would change in some way.
  • Suzuya seems to have a particularly delicious scent when ghouls smell him.
  • He is noted to be the only investigator since Kishou Arima to become a Special Class in his early 20s.
  • In :re Chapter 32, while being promoted to Special Class, his hair clips are arranged into the Roman numeral 20 (XX). This is most likely, referencing the Judgement card which calls for a period of reflection and self-evaluation.
  • In Tokyo Ghoul Trump, he is featured as a "White Joker."
  • It is possible Suzuya is left-handed, as parts of his right arm are stitched, however, he wields his quinque knives with both hands suggesting he is more likely ambidextrous.
  • The practice of body stitching was originally only used in underground cultures and was used as a form of extreme self expression, however Suzuya's character design itself sparked more awareness of it — and more people besides those apart of those cultures began to partake in it.
  • In :re Chapter 179, when visiting Shinohara after he wakes up from his vegetative state, his hair clips are rearranged in the style of the Roman numeral 21 (XXI). This is referencing 'the world' tarot card.

Quotes

  • To unknown ghoul: "Now then, shall we play a game of chef? I'll be the chef and you're the pig."[1]
  • To Kurona: "Try not to hate me too much, okay?"[40]
  • To Mutsuki: "'Fear is like fire,' right? A certain boxing trainer said that. 'If you can control it, it can cook for you, it can heat your house. If you can't control it, it will burn everything and destroy you. Fear is your best friend or your worst enemy.' By the way, the trainer who left behind those words... seems to have trained a magnificent boxer who made boxing history. You guys and Haise are like a big fire."[41] (The boxing trainer he quoted was Cus D'Amato, he trained multiple successful boxers, including Mike Tyson who became the youngest world heavyweight titleholder in history at 20 years old.)
  • To Big Madam: "Mama. The only things you’ve given me are scars. Those are the only things I remember... It doesn't matter what the people around me say, I... don't hold a grudge against you or anything. This is just... my job."[42]
  • To Iwao Kuroiwa (about Sasaki): "Haise is my friend. He'd always give me snacks and stuff. He even made me a delicious pudding on my birthday. He is one of the very few people in the CCG that looks at me without hatred or disgust in his eyes. But... it's already been decided, hasn't it?"[18]
  • To Uta: "Sounds good to me. Let me... draw on your face for you."[24]
