The Rc Scan Gate (Rc検査ゲート, Rc kensa gēto) is a security device used to measure the level of the Rc cells of anyone that passes through them. It is used to detect and identify a ghoul, should one attempt to enter the secured area.

These devices are present in buildings owned by the Commission of Counter Ghoul and used to prevent ghouls from getting past the main lobby.

The devices are considered too expensive for use in most buildings, restricting them to use in government buildings.

Function Edit

The gates resemble a standard metal detector, and function through measuring the Rc levels of the person stepping through them. When it detects a level within the normal range for a ghoul (1000 or above), it emits an alarm and identifies the person as a ghoul.

However, the one-eyed ghouls Ken Kaneki and Eto have once passed through these gates without setting off the alarm.[1][2] According to Eto, the gates have a feature to exempt some Rc cell patterns from setting off the alarm. This function seems to have been put in place to prevent triggering the alarm when investigators pass through the gates with quinques produced from the former kakuhous. However, Eto claims that this feature is also used to exempt Rc cell patterns that belong to ghouls affiliated with V. For this reason, Ken Kaneki and Eto can pass through the gates undetected: Rize and Kuzen were both related to V at some time in the past.[3] Itsuki Marude later discovers through an examination of scanner records that certain employees are exempt from setting off the alarms, in spite of registering as ghouls. These are the members of the Washuu Clan, and all graduates from the Sunlit Garden, including Kishou Arima.[4]

Exempt Individuals Edit

The gates have been programmed to avoid giving a false positive in the case of quinques being carried through the gates. Certain individuals have also been noted to be capable of passing through the gates without setting off the alarms, while still registering as non-human.
